For any new navigator, this place is a challenge. A maze of complex alleys which interconnect together forming into a market. The area consists of three “divisions” being Chinatown itself ”Yawarat” (which sells mostly food and gold and jewellery – weird combination, I know), the Old Market “Talat Gao” which sells fresh produce and is located behind Yawarat along the alleys and roads making their way to the Ratchawong Pier “Tha Nam Ratchawong”, and lastly, “Sampheng” which sells anything and everything and includes both retailers and wholesalers.
Side story: My great-grandfather when he first came to Thailand in the 1930s, lived and worked here at “Sampheng” and in fact, they still own that house , though now it is rented out.
Anyway – This year’s trip saw us exploring Chinatown “Yawarat” and a little into the Old Market before everyone started backing out and walking back to the main street. Oh well, not everything goes to plan!
We walked around and explored for some time before splitting up into two groups and getting dinner. Our group (me Martin Turter Pauline) headed under my guidance to Hua Seng Hong. One of the tried and tested restaurants that all will enjoy!
Overall this was a successful trip and people were already asking when we would come back before the trip even finished. I’m happy!
